Live animal transport
The AVA believes that high standards of animal welfare are necessary and should be enforced in the transport of live animals.
We have actively participated in the development of the new Standards and Guidelines for the Land Transport of Animals, the national standard to protect the welfare of animals being transported for any reason.
Our position statement on live animal export emphasises the need for the highest standards of care for animals exported to other countries. It recognises that there is an important role for veterinarians and the AVA in helping safeguard the welfare of exported animals. This position statement was reviewed in response to member concerns about the treatment of exported Australian cattle in Indonesian abattoirs broadcast by ABC1's Four Corners program on 30 May 2011. Our policy on humane slaughter is also relevant to the issues raised in this program and subsequent actions by the government, parliament and industry.
