New code of practice for prescribing antimicrobial agents
A new appendix has been added to the Guidelines for Prescribing, Authorising and Dispensing Veterinary Medicines. It codifies best practice in prescribing and using products containing antimicrobial agents. If you are an AVA member, log in to read the guidelines. If you are a veterinarian but not a member, you can access the guidelines through this website by using a password. Contact the AVA on 1300 137 309 for the password and have your veterinary registration details handy.
Queensland member dies in Hendra virus tragedy
The AVA is mourning the tragic loss of Dr Ben Cunneen who was infected with the Hendra virus while caring for horses at Redlands Veterinary Clinic in Queensland. Members can make a contribution towards Ben's family or the AVA Benevolent Fund in his memory by downloading the form here and returning it completed to the AVA office in Sydney.
Hendra virus guidelines for vets and horse owners
The Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries has published guidelines for vets and horse owners about identifying and handling suspected cases of Hendra virus infections. These will shortly be updated. Other useful information is also available from the Department's website.
