Chief Veterinary Officer (Victoria)

We are seeking a pro-active Veterinarian with excellent judgement and sound leadership to represent Victoria in animal biosecurity and lead the development of Animal Health policy and operations at a State and national level.

The Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) works within the Biosecurity Division of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries and provides high level scientific, policy and operational expertise to the protection of animals from pests and diseases, protection of the natural and built environments from invasive animals, assurance of effective chemical use, safeguarding the welfare of animals and the preservation and expansion of market access for Victoria's primary industries.

Leading a high performing team, you will collaborate with the Chief Biosecurity Director, Director-Animal Biosecurity and Welfare and Director Animal, Plant and Chemical Operations in setting operational standards and legislation for the prevention, reduction and management of risks and threats to Victoria’s animal health. This will include the design of biosecurity programs that will reduce the impact of exotic pests and diseases. You will represent Victoria at relevant Government, business and industry forums and committees and provide credible advice to the Victorian Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, senior Government Executives and industry groups.

For appointment to this prestigious position, you will need to be an outstanding leader with a credible record of achievement in the Veterinary Science and/or Biosecurity sectors. You will have high level policy advising capability, outstanding communication and negotiation skills, and the capacity to build strong and enduring relationships with staff, stakeholders and customers. As a leader you will enjoy mentoring and developing a team, and building a high performance and results-oriented culture.
