Australian Government’s livestock export reforms
Friday, 21 October 2011
President of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), Dr Barry Smyth said:
“The Australian Veterinary Association fully supports the comprehensive recommendations made in the Farmer review and the government’s commitment to their implementation.
“We welcome the government’s decision to adopt stunning before slaughter as the preferred method as this animal welfare issue is of paramount importance to veterinarians and the Australian public.
“The AVA believes that the slaughter of livestock must be carried out in the most humane manner possible and that all livestock should be stunned prior to slaughter.
“While we welcome the announced reforms relating to AQIS- accredited veterinarians, our recommendation was that all voyages should include government-funded veterinarians to ensure the highest standards of animal health and welfare.
“It is critical that all of these recommendations are now implemented as soon as possible to help ensure the welfare of Australian livestock at home and abroad,” he said.

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is the national professional association of veterinary surgeons in Australia. Founded in 1921, the AVA today represents 5000 members working in all areas of animal science, health and welfare.
