National Minimum Wage Review

The Fair Work Commission this month handed down its annual award and National Minimum Wage (NMW) review decision for 2017/2018.

The decision provided for a 3.3% increase to all modern awards as well as the National Minimum Wage (NMW). In real terms, this equates to a new NMW of $694.90 a week, or $18.29/hr. For private veterinary practices, wages stipulated in the Animal Care and Veterinary Services Award 2010 will also increase by 3.3%.

These increases will come into effect from the first pay period on or after the 1 July 2017.

The AVA HR Advisory Service has updated wage guides available on the AVA website (AVA members must be logged in to access the guides).

Western Australian State Employers

For unincorporated businesses in Western Australia, a wage increase of 2.3% was also recently announced.

This will affect both the state minimum wage, as well as state awards. The new state minimum wage will equate to $708.90 a week. For employees covered by the Animal Welfare Industry Award, the rates stipulated in this award will also increase.

These increases will come into effect from the first pay period on or after the 1 July 2017.

The AVA HR Advisory Service will have new wage guides available once the Western Australian Government (WA Wageline) release their pay guides on the 1 July 2017.
