The 2017 VBG Summit is a two-day event focused on looking at both the future of practice management, as well as the day-to-day management issues faced when running a veterinary practice today.

Veterinary surgeon and entrepreneur Dr Glen Richards

Dr Glen Richards is a veterinary surgeon and co-founder and former CEO of Greencross Ltd (current market cap of $700m ASX:GXL), Australia’s largest consumer facing pet care company.

Glen spent 21 years building a multimillion dollar integrated pet care empire, which now operates more than 160 veterinary hospitals and more than 230 large format pet stores in Australia and New Zealand.

The highly successful entrepreneur is also well known for starring in the hit Network Ten series, Shark Tank.

Glen spends his time as a professional investor, director and mentoring and assisting businesses to scale up.

Industry specialist knowledge and entrepreneurial views of Dr Alison Lambert, Managing Director of Onswitch.

Dr Alison Lambert is from Yorkshire and her family come from East Yorkshire where they have worked the land, raised pigs and wasted lots of money on horses.

Following qualification as a vet from Liverpool University in 1989, Alison worked in practice for several years before pursuing a business career with Hill’s Pet Nutrition and MARS, where she discovered the passion for the customer experience that her award-winning company, Onswitch, is renowned for today.

Established in 2001, Onswitch promotes customer-centred practice so pets and horses receive better care; providing research, marketing, CPD and business consultancy with an effective, innovative, straight-talking and client-led approach.

Alison is a lecturer at The University of Nottingham Vet School, teaching customer understanding. She is published widely and regularly speaks at key international veterinary congresses and events.

The generational and trends expertise of Claire Madden.

Claire Madden is a social researcher, media commentator, keynote presenter, TEDx speaker, business consultant, and founder and Director of the strategy and communications agency, Hello Clarity. Jane Bindloss became committed to raising the standards, professionalism and self-esteem of Australian veterinary nurses in 1992 when she was elected onto the committee of the Veterinary Nurses Association of Victoria. Jane has held a variety of positions on the national Executive of the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia from 1994 to 2010 and is proud to be a Life Member. 

She was a Finalist in the Telstra Business Women's Awards in 1997 and received the Australian Veterinary Association’s Meritorious Service Award the same year.  From 1996-2004 Jane sat on the National Industry Advisory Group for Veterinary Nursing and was appointed to the Companion Animal Working Group of the Australian Federal government’s Australian Animal Welfare Strategy. 

In 1999 Jane and her husband established ‘Pets at the Vets’ veterinary hospital - regarded as being an ideal veterinary workplace.  As a Life Member of the Australian Veterinary Business Association (now the VBG) she is committed to the vision of “outstanding veterinary business success”. Jane and business partner Sally Boyle consult to veterinary practices all around Australia on a variety of veterinary practice management concerns through their company “SANE – Management and Leadership Solutions for Veterinary Practices”. 


Michael Dicks (AVMA) received his undergraduate degrees in biochemistry and animal science from California Polytechnic State University. 

Before joining the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) as director of its Economics Division, Dr. Dicks was a professor of Agricultural Economics for 24 years and directed the Great Plains Agricultural Policy Center and the Center for International Trade and Development at Oklahoma State University. He also owned and operated Cimarron Dunes, a 100-head capacity Angus cow-calf operation.

Dr. Dicks has nearly 500 written documents including journal articles, Congressional Testimonies, books/book chapters, research reports, and other publications (extension newsletters, project reports, professional papers, and articles in periodicals).  

He is a prolific writer and publishes a monthly column, “Eye on Economics” in DVM360.com and speaks frequently at veterinary conferences to provide economics expertise to the veterinary profession.


Paul Ainsworth, the founding director of the Lincoln Institute, is a highly sought after executive coach, facilitator and key note presenter with a focus on stimulating organisational team and individual leadership potential.

Paul is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy, University of New South Wales, the Royal Military College Duntroon and was awarded the prestigious Sasakawa Leadership Scholarship by the Australian Graduate School of Management’s Executive MBA program.
Paul has over 30 years of leadership experience across all socio economic and geopolitical boundaries making him highly sought after as an instructor and facilitator to all levels of business. Paul is married with three children and resides in Sydney, Australia.
In 2012, following a ‘chance’ introduction, Paul and the Lincoln Institute turned its attention to small business, specifically the veterinary profession. During this time, Paul and his co-directors (all highly successful veterinary business owners) have helped hundreds of practice owners achieve life-changing business results through effective leadership and team development.


Dr Shane Simpson is co-owner Karingal Veterinary Hospital located in Frankston, Melbourne. It is the only ASAV Accredited hospital on the Mornington Peninsula.

His clinical area of interest is in the field of reptile medicine and surgery. He regularly presents both in Australia and overseas to fellow veterinarians, veterinary nurses and reptile keepers on assorted topics relating to these fascinating animals. In addition, he is contributing author to several text books on the subject and consultant veterinarian for many reptile shops and aquariums, wildlife shelters, reptile demonstrator businesses, wildlife parks and large commercial collections.

Shane was a founding board member and past-president of the Australian Veterinary Business Association.

He has had an interest in veterinary practice management for many years and is always keen to develop new and innovative ways to advance in this field. In 2011 he created the Parasite Prevention Program. This innovative way of improving client compliance with their pet’s paraciticide treatments has seen him more than double the sales of these products in his practice. In 2016 the Program was awarded the Practice Innovation Award from the Australian Veterinary Business Association. 


Dr Ian Fulton is a specialist equine surgeon based at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice.

He graduated from Melbourne University in 1983 and began practice in Kyabram, Victoria and then spent 2 years in equine practice in Adelaide. Ian completed a residency in Equine Surgery and Master of Science at Michigan State University in 1990.

In 1992 Ian became a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the Equine Surgery Chapter and in 2009 Ian completed his Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists. 

Ian's special interest is laryngeal reinnervation in horses and he has continued researching the reinnervation technique both here in Victoria and more recently is collaborating with surgeons in the USA and in France to enhance the procedure. In 2011 Ian co-authored with Brian Anderson the chapter on “The Larynx” in Auer and Stick’s Text ”Equine surgery. 

Ian was the President of AVA’s equine special interest group, EVA in 2015-16 and was presented with an AVA Meritorius Service Award in 2017.

Ian continues to serve AVA as the organisation’s official racing industry spokesperson and as AVA’s nominee to Racing Australia’s Veterinary and Analysts Committee.


Dr Rachel Chay is Chief Veterinary Officer at Greencross

Rachel is an experienced companion animal practitioner who has worked in both general and emergency and critical care practice for 15 years.  She has completed her membership exams in Feline Medicine and also worked as an accredited vet for AQIS preparing small animals for export.  In 2016, she completed a Masters in Organisational Development which included further studies in clinical leadership, clinical governance and a research project on the retention of veterinarians in the industry.

Rachel has been with Greencross for 5 years and currently sits on the executive team in the role of Chief Veterinary Officer. This role allows her to assist her teams with the ongoing challenges and needs of veterinarians in specialty, emergency and general practice in Australia while providing veterinary insight to the Greencross management team.


Simon Neaverson is a leader in governance, strategy and risk management having advised boards, partnerships and senior managers in numerous Australian and international organisations, across a broad range of industries for more than 25 years. He is the founder of TPPG Pty Limited, a consultancy aligning strategy, risk oversight and good governance.

Simon has facilitated industry reviews on behalf of the NSW Government in the finance and insurance industries, business and property services, education and training, wholesale and retail trade, mining, the wine and the cut flower sectors.

A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), Simon is a senior facilitator and educator in corporate strategy, risk, governance and improving board effectiveness. He was recently presented with an AICD 20 year Faculty Award “in appreciation of (his) ongoing contribution and excellence to the gold standard in governance education.”


Nick Tindley is Executive Manager of HR Consulting and Advisory Services at FCB HR.

Nick has over twelve years’ experience providing industrial relations and employment law advice, with particular expertise in the retail industry. After being employed by the Young Workers Advisory Service in Brisbane as an advisor to young people experiencing difficulties at work, Nick progressed to a role at the National Retail Association (NRA). Within three years, he was promoted to director of the NRA’s employment law division.

Since joining FCB Group, Nick has been managing the employment relations telephone advisory services for the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), Recruitment & Consulting Services Australia, Victorian Association for Newsagents, Australian Podiatry Association, Hair and Beauty Industry Australia, Australian Childcare Alliance Victoria, and Fitness Australia. Nick led ARA’s participation in the 2012 Award Review and is currently leading the case for the retail industry in the 2014 Award Review.
