What you need to practice

Registration

To practice as a veterinarian in Australia, you need a veterinary degree that meets the criteria of your state registration board. Each state and territory has a registration board, and you need to be registered in each state you work in. Australia is in the process of setting up national recognition of veterinary registration which will mean that your registration in your home state will be recognised by all other Australian jurisdictions. However, the new arrangements have not yet taken effect in any states.

Radiation licence

To use x-ray equipment, you will need a licence from your state regulation body. Licences are issued by either your state department of health or department for the environment.

Insurance

If you’re employed as a veterinarian, your work will be covered by your employer’s professional indemnity insurance. If you do any veterinary work outside the practice such as at competition events or as a volunteer, you should think about having your own insurance cover. You can contact Guild Insurance to discuss your professional insurance needs. AVA members receive a premium reduction for professional indemnity insurance provided through Guild.

Microchipping

In New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, you are required to have your own authorised microchip implanter number.
