THRIVE Cultivating Safe Teams Pilot Program


The application process for the pilot program is closed. We will provide more information at the conclusion of the pilot program training, in early 2025.


In response to our 2021 Veterinary Wellness stakeholder research and broader industry discussions in late 2022, AVA is delighted to lead the THRIVE Cultivating Safe Teams Pilot Program. This initiative aims to deliver psychological health and safety awareness training sessions for all individuals working in the veterinary profession. This will be a tailored, one-hour in-workplace training that is fit for purpose for the veterinary profession and made available free of charge for 50 participating workplaces between September 2023 and December 2024.

The purpose of the program is to:

  1. Articulate the definitions of psychological health and safety, workplace culture and ‘safe teams’ for veterinary and animal health businesses
  2. Provide evidence-based and strengths-based examples of a safe team
  3. Inspire individuals to consider how they can help build a safe veterinary team through personal responsibility and accountability
  4. Encourage practice leaders, managers, and entire teams to define and commit to cultivating a workplace that is safe, equitable and well.

This pilot program is a key focus, but not our only focus for THRIVE this year. We will continue to support the profession through our Prevent/Promote/Protect pillars, delivering programs and resources that prevent harm from psychosocial hazards in the industry; promote strengths, capabilities and the rewards of work; and protect all of us when we experience stress and are unwell.

What's involved?

Successful applicants and their workplace are required to sign an industry pledge stating their commitment to cultivating a safe and mentally healthy workplace.

Participating workplaces will need to provide appropriate facilities for training to occur onsite, relevant to the number of participants involved within their workplace.

Participating workplaces agree to dedicate up to 2 hours of training leave for team members participating in the pilot program.

All participants will be asked to complete ongoing surveys, participate in at least two online feedback sessions and be available for interviews during and after the conclusion of the pilot program.



Cultivating Safe Teams Training Partner
