The Awards and Scholarships available provide a great opportunity to recognise achievements of our equine veterinary peers and help to evolve our practice and knowledge.

Awards & prizes 

Sponsored by Provet, this award is open to EVA members who have shown leadership and enterprise, made contributions to knowledge (particularly at the research and post graduate level) been involved in delivering post graduate education and have made a significant contribution to the equine veterinary profession. Publications of scientific papers or post graduate advancement will be considered favourably.

The prize for the excellence in the equine veterinary field award is a stunning perpetual trophy, an individual glass memento and complimentary registration to Bain Fallon, airfare, five (5) nights accommodation and a ticket to the Gala dinner.

Sponsored by EVA, this award will be given to a person who has made a major contribution to the Australian horse industry through leadership, enterprise and service to the betterment of horses, their owners and the community. 

The prize for the services to the horse industry award is a grand perpetual trophy an individual glass memento and also includes complimentary day registration to the Bain Fallon Memorial lectures (Thursday 22 July) airfare, one night’s accommodation and a ticket to the Gala Dinner.

Sponsored by Interpath – 4CYTE, this award will be given to an outstanding individual in the Young Members Group, who has contributed to EVA and demonstrated dedication to clinical practice, as well as meritorious industry and community involvement.

This award honours two of our EVA colleagues who died tragically from Hendra virus in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The prize for the Cunneen-Rodgers award is a perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $500.

Sponsored by CEVA Animal Health, this prize is open to all veterinarians, with the qualifications set out below, who present the best clinical or research paper at the combined ANZCVS / EVA abstract session.

Candidates must hold or be 2 years into a specialist qualification (Fellowship or Diplomate of a Specialist Veterinary College) or advanced research degrees (for example, MVSc, PhD, DVSc). The topic may include any clinical or research project exclusively involved with horses. The prize for the Reg Pascoe is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento, and $1000 for EVA members and $500 for non-members.

Sponsored by Virbac Australia, this prize is open to all veterinarians (except for those members who are eligible for the Reginald Pascoe Prize referred to above), who present the best clinical or research paper at the combined ANZCVS/EVA abstract session.

The topic may include any clinical or research project exclusively involved with horses. The prize for the Norman Larkin is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and $1000 for EVA members and $500 for non-members.

Sponsored by Interpath – 4CYTE, this prize is open to Young Members of EVA who produce a poster for presentation, or present the best clinical or research paper at the combined ANZCVS / EVA abstract session at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures.

The poster or presentation may cover any topic in equine veterinary science, and be research or clinically orientated. The prize for the best Young Member Poster is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $500.

Sponsored by Ausrichter Animal Health, this prize is open to all EVA members who produce a poster for presentation at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures. The posters may cover any topic in equine veterinary science. Posters must be the original work of the member and must be original research.

Clinical case reports or case series are not eligible for this prize. The poster should contain some innovative information, or an advancement of knowledge for the equine veterinary profession. The prize for the best Research Poster is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $500.

Sponsored by EVA, this competition is open to all EVA members, including Young Members, who produce a poster for presentation at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures. The poster may cover any topic in equine veterinary science that involves information pertaining to the advancement of the equine veterinary profession.

Individual case reports or case series are eligible for this prize. The prize for the best Clinical Poster is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $500.

Sponsored by Dechra Veterinary Products, this award is open to primary authors who are members of EVA (including office bearers), and have published a paper in The Australian Equine Veterinarian during the previous 12 months. The paper should be of high scientific merit and of interest to the practicing equine veterinarian, but the information does not have to be novel.

The prize for the Peter Irwin is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $1,500.

Sponsored by Impulse Print, this award is open to primary authors who are not members of EVA, and have published a paper in The Australian Equine Veterinarian during the previous 12 months. The paper should be of high scientific merit and of interest to the practicing equine veterinarian, but the information does not have to be novel.

The prize for the John Bourke is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $1,500.


Scholarships

Sponsored by Interpath, the Bain Fallon Young Member Scholarships provides an opportunity for four Equine Group Young Members to attend our flagship event free of charge. This is an opportunity for the successful scholar to continue their education and broaden their networking opportunities among equine veterinarians.

The scholarship is open to current financial Equine Group Young Members who can demonstrate outstanding ability and commitment to their profession and the horse industry.

The scholarship prize includes a complimentary full registration to the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures 2021, shared accommodation at the conference hotel, attendance at the Scholars' Celebratory Tuesday Lunch held with representatives of both Interpath and Equine Veterinarians Australia.

Selection criteria

All applications should be able to demonstrate the following criteria in their submission:

  • An involvement in and commitment to the horse industry
  • An interest in pursuing educational opportunities relevant to equine veterinary work
  • An intention to further develop and continue career opportunities in the equine veterinary profession
  • Applications from graduate veterinarians in equine practice will be highly regarded.
  • Applications must be in a PDF format and submitted by 9.00am Friday 30 April 2021 using the online form provided.

Sponsored by Ceva Animal Health, the scholarship offers all members of EVA an opportunity to fund or subsidise their continuing education, training or professional development within the equine field.

Applications are invited for the Ceva Animal Health scholarship award, being presented at the Ceva casual dinner at Bain Fallon in July 2021.      

  • The scholarship is open to ALL current financial members of EVA.
  • The value of the scholarship is $5,000 (inc. GST).
  • The objective of the Ceva Scholarship is to support the advancement of equine health and equine veterinary science. Projects will be reviewed based on how well they meet the objective and may include; an original research project, study or other endeavour.
  • Applications should be made in writing and not be less than 500 words, outlining the purposes for which the scholarship will be used.
  • The winning members are to compile a short report on the results of the scholarship project and its benefit to the member for publication in The Australian Equine Veterinarian journal.
  • The winning members consent to their image and project being used in approved media to further promote EVA and the scholarship for a period of two years post their winning application.

Application must be received by the close of business, Friday 4 June 2021.
