Overview

Following the results of the last workforce survey, the AVA and AVA HR Advisory Service have developed the Employer of Choice (EOC) Program to help develop leading veterinary workplaces through practices that demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention. The acute skills shortage in the veterinary profession has made staff attraction and retention critically important to the success of any veterinary practice. The AVA Employer of Choice program has been designed to equip veterinary employers with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to attract and retain great employees.

Who should attend

The AVA Employer of Choice program (stage 1 - online learning) is complimentary for all AVA members. It's designed for Practice Managers, Owners, or those who work in a management or HR related capacity in practice.

Learning outcome

The EOC Program consists of 2 optional surveys (manager survey and employee survey), a flexible and interactive online learning module, plus many resources and templates. The online learning module features 30 best-practice employee retention strategies developed by the team at the AVA HR Advisory Service who have 20 years of experience working with the veterinary profession. The strategies include case studies of what to do and what not to do, exercises and activities, ‘to do’ lists and optional reflective questions.

The EOC Program is available to AVA members as part of AVA's member benefits (stage 1 only - includes steps 1 to 4 below) and forms part of an optional EOC Accreditation (stage 2). The optional accreditation phase will be available in the second half of 2021 - visit this page for accreditation costs.

In the meantime, practices are encouraged to commence the EOC Program:

  1. Register in the EOC Program; then
  2. Conduct the (optional) surveys
  3. Complete the online learning; and
  4. Implement the strategies in the EOC Program

Upon registration you will be sent a confirmation email. The email will provide instructions on how to access the Employer of Choice course, including the surveys, online learning and implementation recommendations.
