Overview

The Tasmanian Division would like to invite new graduates and recent arrivals to Tasmania to the Division's dinner (3 courses) with special guest, Dr. Jim Connah who will speak about "Volunteering in the Veterinary World". Jim will discuss the volunteering opportunities available utilising your veterinary degree. Options can include contributing to small things locally, taking part in desexing clinics overseas, to running book programs. Jim will talk about some of the volunteering he has undertaken during his career, including trips to India, Tonga and Samoa, as well as to the indigenous communities in Australia. Come along and meet other vets at the same stage of their career and create new contacts in your local area. FREE to attend for both AVA member New Graduates (graduated 2019-2021) and AVA member recent arrivals to Tasmania (since June 2021).

Dr James Connah
Jim graduated from Sydney University in 1992 and has been a veterinarian for 30 years working in over 30 practices, including locums in England, Papua New Guinea and most states of Australia. He has spent a year with his family on a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley (WA) performing voluntary work, as well as in India and Somoa. He is currently in his 10th year working at the Tasmanian Veterinary Hospital in Bellerive. Jim became a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Medicine in 2007. His special interests include eye diseases, endocrine diseases and cancer therapy. Outside of work, Jim has two teenage boys ("no time for pastimes - mostly a taxi for them") and says he enjoys bushwalking and running. He has a Border Collie "Frankie", 4 alpacas and a sheep "Violet" (who thinks she's an alpaca.
