To recognise this splendid milestone, the 'Finding New Ways' Conference was held in March 2023, covering topics such as carbon neutral farming, antimicrobial stewardship, new technologies and surgical techniques. As a member of the Australian Cattle Veterinarians, you can register in this event to view the conference proceedings on the AVA’s My Learning platform. If you attended the conference you do not need to register to access the proceedings – please follow the instructions in the Further Details section.

If you previously attended the 2023 ACV & NT Division Conference held in Darwin on 28-31 March 2023, please follow the steps below to access the Australian Cattle Veterinarians Conference 2023 Proceedings course on My Learning: 

  1. Browse to https://mylearning.ava.com.au 
  2. Click on the Personal account button
  3. If you are prompted, log in with your AVA website account* 
  4. When you land on the My Learning Home Page, click on the Record of Learning button. IMPORTANT: the webinar course will appear in approximately 5 minutes. You can refresh your browser during this time to speed up the process a little. 

 * Don't have an AVA website account? Click here to create an account and follow the prompts. Following this, your new account and the on demand course will be available within the next hour. After this time, please return to the steps above.

 

When a Registrant registers in an on demand course via the education and events calendar on the website, the registrant will receive an email outlining how to access the on demand course on My Learning. If they  

  • have an existing AVA website account, they can log in to My Learning and within 5 minutes of logging in, access the on demand course. 
  • don’t have an AVA website account, they will need to create one first by following the instructions above. Within an hour after creating their account they will be able to log in to My Learning and within 5 minutes of logging in, access the on demand course.

Associate Professor John House is Unit Head of the Livestock Veterinary Teaching and Research Unit at Sydney School of Veterinary Science. John graduated from Murdoch University and completed specialty training in large animal medicine plus a PhD at University of California, Davis, before returning to Australia, where he was named Bovine Practitioner of the Year by the Australian Cattle Veterinarians Association in 2020.
Dr Alison Gunn
Alison Gunn has worked in dairy and beef practice for nearly 30 years. She has a passion for calves, and has investigated many calf scours outbreaks as well as researched, published and provided technical advice to industry on calf health and nutrition. From 2004 until 2014 she was the project manager for series of MLA projects on Calf Scours in Suckler Beef Herds. Currently, she runs a veterinary clinical and consultancy business, Herd Solutions, based in East Gippsland.

Dr Ross Ainsworth
Ross Ainsworth is a veterinarian with 45 years experience in the Australian beef industry. The last 35 years have been between spent mainly in the Northern Territory of Australia with frequent travel to Southeast Asia. His experience ranges from government and private veterinary practice specialising in the preparation of cattle for live export, cattle station management and as CEO of Northern Territory Livestock Exporters Association. Ross currently lives in Bali, Indonesia.

Dr Lucy Collins
Lucy worked in dairy practice for seven years in Victoria with Apiam Animal Health before receiving Nuffield scholarship to investigate international dairy welfare programs, supported by the Gardiner Foundation. She is also a dairy farmer, and is currently enrolled in the Dairy Resident Training Program at the University of Melbourne, where her research interests include cow welfare and social science. Lucy is now working with Fonterra Australia as their new Animal Health and Welfare Manager.
Dr Sarah Matthews
Sarah graduated in 2015 from the University of Sydney and worked at the Allansford branch of The Vet Group as a full time dairy veterinarian for two years before locuming for 2 years. After working in WA, Tasmania and NSW, she returned to The Vet Group and has developed an interest in dairy cattle reproduction and in a fractured limb syndrome in dairy heifers occurring in the local area. This syndrome has led to an interest and investigation into copper deficiency and supplementation in the local area.

Prof Michael McGowan
Michael is Professor of Livestock Medicine in the School of Veterinary Science at The University Queensland, Honorary Professor of Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery at The Royal Veterinary College, University of London and a diplomate of the European College of Animal Reproduction. He grew up on a small mixed cereal grain fat-lamb and beef farm in north-west NSW and completed his undergraduate veterinary training at The University of Sydney - go the blues.
