On-Demand | Bearded Dragons - medicine and surgery | Dr John Chitty 1 CPD Points

Overview

Bearded dragons (Pogona spp) are probably the most commonly kept lizard species in the UK. This is partly due to the ease of breeding in captivity; their relative tractability; and a perception of being easy to keep as a beginner’s reptile. They are also sold as a low-cost pet. As a result they are frequently presented to veterinary clinics with a variety of issues, ranging from infectious diseases (often a consequence of the “farming” and distribution of this species via the pet industry) to husbandry-related disorders.

Learning outcome

This talk will look at the biological needs of Bearded dragons and how these should tie in with their husbandry and diet. It will also cover the commonly seen conditions of Bearded dragons and how these can be recognised, treated and, if possible, prevented.

One other consequence of the low cost of this pet is often a perceived lack of value of the individual, which can restrict the choices of the attending veterinarian. While covering some advanced imaging, the talk will concentrate on a practical, “signs-based” approach to Bearded dragon medicine and welfare.
