Overview
Long may they grace our skies: Black cockatoo health and ecology research Murdoch University’s Black Cockatoo Conservation Management research team has been undertaking research on Western Australia’s black cockatoos over the last 17 years. There are three species of black cockatoo endemic to the south-west of Western Australia, Carnaby’s cockatoo, Baudin’s cockatoo and forest red-tailed black cockatoo, all of which are threatened. The health research on Carnaby’s cockatoos aims to better understand the potential role of disease as a threatening process for this species. Over the last 12 years, the research team has been tracking all three species of black cockatoos using GPS and ARGOS satellite telemetry, which enables the team to obtain flock movement, behavioural and ecological data across different spatial scales. This talk will focus on the health and ecology research undertaken by the interdisciplinary research team, comprising wildlife veterinarians and ecologists, and discuss how the research findings are used to inform black cockatoo conservation efforts and land management decision-making at local, state and federal government level.

Dr Tony English was pivotal in establishing the Australian Veterinary Conservation Biology (AVCB) special interest group in 1991 and was a driving force behind its activities until his death in 2015. The proposal to establish an award was made in 2018 and the inaugural lecture presented by Dr Rupert Woods in 2021. The award is supported by the Tony English family, Dr John Aspley-Davis and AVCB. The lecture is the Conservation Biology group’s premier award. It provides a distinguished conservation biologists with a platform to contribute their knowledge and experience to the guidance and inspiration of future scientists and policy makers.
AVCB is pleased to present Professor Kirstin Warren with the 2024 Tony English Award.
