Learning outcome

Are we too quick to cut?

Surgical intervention, performing an ovariohysterectomy is curative and unfortunately a treatment choice which many veterinarians have leaned towards due to it being the "safe" approach, also preventing recurrence. It is however a choice which renders bitches infertile, which is not an acceptable outcome for many breeders if there were other choices available.

Since the availability of medical treatments such as the progesterone antagonist, aglepristone, there has been an acceptable outcome when careful monitoring of the bitches vitals and toxemia status is performed.  In Australia we are so lucky to have the drug readily available to us, as many countries do not.

Presenter(s)

Dr Sarah Ward
Sarah grew up in the Yarra Valley, Victoria on a commercial deer farm and horse trail-riding property. This love for animals, but keen interest in breeding and reproduction followed her into her university studies at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. She completed a double degree in Bachelor of Applied Science (equine) and Bachelor of Science (production animal) before studying the Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Veterinary Science degrees. Whilst at university Sarah spent some time abroad working at Warmblood Stallion Stations in the Netherlands. She also started breeding and showing Hungarian Vizslas in 2010, developing a breeding program with contribution from imported dogs and genetic material. She was supported academically with the mentorship of such theriogenologists at Dr Scott Norman, Dr Cyril P Stephen and Dr Jennifer Clulow. Upon graduation in 2014, she entered mixed practice at Maffra Veterinary Centre in the beautiful Gippsland. The mix of work here allowed Sarah to develop skills across a variety of species, however it was canine reproduction that drew Sarah into the small animal side of the business attaining the position Clinical Lead of the Apiam Furlife Sale clinic. Sarah is a candidate for the American College of Theriogenologists set to sit the exams in 2025. She attends multiple study groups both here in Australia and the USA on a weekly basis thanks to the convenience of Zoom. These are discussion groups in theriogenology topics following study guidelines set out by the ACT. When asked to present on Canine Pyometra to the ARV, she took this as a challenge to go into greater depth of her own studies to present both her own experience in practice as well as the scientific information available to us at this current time.
