Association between domestic violence and pet abuse

Description

Whilst there is increasing awareness for domestic violence in Australia, there is limited awareness on the association between domestic violence and pet abuse. Almost half of victims who have children reported of their children witnessing threats of abuse or actual abuse towards the family pet. These findings reinforce the necessity for services to cater for victims and pets of abuse. Victims of domestic violence with pets will more likely seek help with recognised services reducing the frequency and duration of pet abuse in Sydney.
