AVA Submission of the Draft Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs in the ACT July 202222 Jul 2022
The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) was invited to provide comment on the proposed amendments to the Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs in the ACT.
The Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (the Committee) is established by the Animal Welfare Act 1992 (the Act) to, among other things:
- Advise the Minister about animal welfare legislation; and
- Participate in the development of approved codes of practice and mandatory codes of practice.
The Committee undertook a comprehensive review of the current Dogs Code of Practice 1996 and determined that the current code required considerable updating and redrafting. Two key areas identified as requiring updating were in regard to euthanasia/slaughter of horses and regulatory oversight bodies.
A copy of the proposed Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dog in the ACT can be found here for your review. A copy of the current Welfare of Dogs in the ACT Code of Practice 2010 can be found at here.
The AVA consulted with relevant AVA committees and the AVA ACT Members to seek expert member input to inform its submission on the proposed new Code of Practice (CoP).
Thank you to the ACT Division Committee Members who generously gave their time and expertise as the main contributors AVA submission. Read the full submission here.
