Japanese Encephalitis Detected in Feral Pigs in Western NSW

In the NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Bulletin dated 17 December 2024, the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSW DPIRD) confirmed the detection of Japanese Encephalitis in feral pigs in Tominley, near Dubbo.

The detection followed testing of samples taken from deceased feral pigs at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, as part of the NSW DPIRD's feral pig surveillance program.

Notably, earlier detections of Japanese Encephalitis were reported in mosquitoes near Griffith on 3 December 2024 under the NSW Health Arbovirus Monitoring Program.
