Remembering the 2003 Canberra Bushfires

30 Jan 2023

In January 2003 Canberra, had devastating bushfires that tragically killed four people, injured 435 people, and destroyed 510 properties. With almost 70 percent of the ACT burnt, sadly hundreds of horses, and thousands of sheep and wildlife were killed.

In memory of the 2003 Canberra bushfires, the AVA are compiling veterinarians' stories of their experiences in the bushfires to share with the next generation and capture the lessons learnt for future planning and advocacy.

Veterinarians who lived, worked, or provided assistance at the time of the January 2003 Canberra bushfires are requested to share their memories, pictures and lessons learnt. In respect of the 20 year anniversary since the Canberra bushfires, the information provided will be compiled into a feature communication for the AVA ACT newsletter and available on the AVA website.

Please send your stories, photos, and lessons learnt to AVA Senior Advocacy Officer at liz.gemes@ava.com.au by Sunday 26th March 2023.
