Survey – pet friendly aged care

03 Feb 2023

The AVA is pleased to support a survey by Pet-Friendly Aged Care which aligns with the AVA policy 'Companion animals in aged-care accommodation'.

“The integration of companion animals into retirement and aged-care facilities has many potential benefits. The aged care industry are encouraged to take responsibility for implementing such initiatives. Veterinarians should be involved in protocol development and care of these animals to ensure their optimal health and welfare, to maximise benefits and minimise risks for the animals and facility residents.”

A Federal Government Service List Advisory Body is considering pet care assistance/pet support as part of the new federally funded in-home aged care program due to come into effect July 2024.

The decision on this will be critically important for many thousands of frail aged pet owners dependent on in-home care who rely on, and benefit from, daily pet companionship. It is likely to be made by around mid-2023.

The results of this survey, being helpfully compiled by the Companion Animal Network Australia, will provide Federal government decision-makers with valuable information about what older pet owners need and want in the new Federal in-home aged care program.

Pet-Friendly Aged Care is a place where elderly pet owners, their families and aged care facility operators can find tips and advice that allow residents to keep their pets in safe and responsible ways and is supported by the Companion Animal Network (Australia CAN).
