Mental Health First Aid Training – giving you the tools to provide support during a mental health crisis

02 Feb 2024

The AVA offers training tailor made for the veterinary profession to support colleagues, family and friends should an emergency mental health crisis arise. More than ever before, we need to feel confident that we have the right knowledge and skillset to adequately support colleagues, clients and loved ones with mental health challenges.

Our March course has a number of limited places available, and members are encouraged to apply before 16 February to take part in this online program.

Course format:

Part A - e-learning module

This will take approximately 6-8 hours to complete, and you can start straight away using the MHFA online training manual available once your registration is confirmed.

Important: you must complete the e-learning component at least one week prior to the virtual workshops.

Part B - Virtual workshop training

Wednesday 6 March: 11.00am to 1.30pm AEDT; and

Wednesday 13 March: 11.00am to 1.30pm AEDT

This component of the training has been tailor made for the veterinary profession by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and is facilitated by Andrew Thompson from Provet/Crampton Consulting. The training is strictly limited to 12 participants and will be delivered in two online sessions of 2.5 hours each session.

What’s covered in the course?

  • Explore mental health problems such as depression, anxiety problems, psychosis and substance misuse problems.
  • Participants will then learn the practical, evidence-based communication techniques to reach out to those in need.
  • Take-home resources including a 140-page manual, information sheets and facts sheets will also be provided.

Register here for the March workshop or contact us if you have any questions.
