Understanding the THRIVE Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework
01 Mar 2024The THRIVE Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework is a tool for change developed by industry, for industry. At the heart of it is a deep desire to protect veterinary professionals while they do their important work and make a positive impact at every level of the profession, for individuals, teams, and businesses.
Why a Framework?
Developing a Framework helps define and articulate the change we all wish to see. It is no secret that our profession experiences unique challenges, however the future looks bright, and a Framework can assist in articulating a desired future state and what initiatives are required to get our profession there.
The latest data from Safe Work Australia, released 27 February 2024 shows that mental health conditions accounted for 9% of all serious workers’ compensation claims during 2021-22 – a 36.9% increase since 2017-18. During this same period, the median compensation paid for mental health conditions was more than 3 times greater than that of all physical injuries and illnesses.
Where did the THRIVE Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework come from?
The THRIVE Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework was informed and led by YOU. We brought together a range of stakeholders in the profession and asked them what the critical issues were and what should be done to address them. The AVA heard from students, veterinary nurses, graduate and experienced veterinarians, managers, and business owners. In partnership with these stakeholders, the AVA’s Veterinary Wellness Steering Group synthesized the feedback and curated a Framework that reflected the needs of the industry.
What are the key areas of the Framework?
The Framework outlines three key priorities that are required to be achieved to address mental health in our profession:
- Preventing harm and mental ill-health from psychosocial hazards in the industry
- Promoting mental health and leveraging protective factors such as strengths, capabilities, and rewards of work
- Protecting individuals who experience stress and mental ill-health.
These pillars act as a compass for any future AVA wellness programs, events, and resources for our profession. Similarly, the pillars of the Framework challenge workplaces to manage risks to mental health and cultivate ways of working that move towards eliminating psychological harm. The Framework is a living document that will evolve and improve over time.
How can I use it in my practice?
The wonderful thing about the Framework is that it invites individuals and teams to explore and discuss how they can make mental health and well-being a priority. The Framework applies to anyone, and it challenges us to remember that we are all responsible for creating a work environment that is free from psychological risk and stigma relating to mental ill-health. The AVA encourages everyone to talk about the Framework, explore each pillar, and create ways of working that prevent harm, promote good mental health, and protect each other.
