Companion animals

Pets are an important part of Australian families and communities. Research has shown that sharing your life with a pet gives you an important advantage in relation to your health and helps you connect with your neighbours and your community.

All pet owners need to care for their pets as well as being considerate of their neighbours. Socially-responsible pet ownership includes choosing the right pet for their lifestyle and making sure it's properly socialised, trained and under their control.

Vets understand the bond between people and their pets, and educate owners about how to keep their pets happy and healthy for as long as possible.

Unfortunately a very small minority of pet owners don't always act responsibly, and communities need to manage problems such as unwanted companion animals and dogs with aggressive behaviour. The AVA has policies on these and related issues, and emphasises the need for solid research and evidence for policy decision-making.
