Consultation on the ACT Veterinary Practice Bill 2017

Dear veterinary surgeons,

Thank you to everyone who has provided comments on the ACT Government’s proposed Veterinary Practice Bill 2017 (the Bill). Thank you also to those who attended the consultation session on 9 November 2017.

This is a reminder to advise all registered veterinary surgeons that consultation on the Bill will close on 8 December 2017. The ACT Government is working through the comments received to date and will be responding over the coming weeks.

To ensure the Bill achieves its aim of promoting animal welfare and protecting the public, the veterinary profession and the community are encouraged to provide comment on the Bill by the above date.

Feedback or comments on the Bill for consideration by ACT Government are to be sent to Staff are also able to discuss the Bill on 02 6207 0012.

Outcomes of consultation to date:

As part of the consultation the ACT Government has received a petition advising that the ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board (the Board) is not remunerated. For the information of the veterinary profession, the Board is remunerated for its services, and remuneration levels can be seen through the link below.

In addition to the above, and based on feedback received to date, the ACT Government is considering changes to the composition of the Board. It was proposed to have the seventh member of the Board as an optional appointment for cost saving purposes, which could be occupied by a registered veterinary practitioner or a non veterinary practitioner. The government is considering whether to amend this to require the position be a mandatory appointment that is occupied by a registered veterinary practitioner.
A summary of outcomes of the consultation once complete will be provided to the veterinary profession.

Kind regards,

Sarah Pau | Business Coordinator, ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board
