Missed out on attending our Spring State Meetings this year? View recordings of Prof James Gilkerson and Dr Brian Anderson’s talks here.

Prof Gilkerson presented two talks, the first on “From Herpes to Hendra: an exploration of viral neurological disease”. Viral infection remains a common inclusion in the list of differential diagnoses for clinicians dealing with horses with cases of neurological disease. Australia is home to numerous viruses which can cause neurological disease in horses. These viruses have different means of transmission, affect different hosts and represent different levels of threat to practitioners and public health.

The second talk James presented is “Biosecurity -The Practitioners Role”. Biosecurity procedures are essential for avoiding problems associated with infectious diseases. Biosecurity is best done as a bespoke plan tailored to the needs of an individual client. Isolation of new animals on arrival, comprehensive vaccination strategies, ICP and contingency plans are all useful strategies that can be employed.

Dr Anderson talk is about “Diagnostic Challenges and Decision Making – what is important?” In this presentation the aim is to show a range of clinical cases that are common in equine practice. Lameness, imaging, medical and surgical cases are included. In each case photographs, diagnostic images and videos are used to illustrate the features of the condition. The steps needed to make a diagnosis, and the importance of logical decision making will be highlighted. Sit back, enjoy the show, and go home with plenty of practical tips!
