The NEW AVA government team membership is designed to bring whole-team coverage to veterinary and animal health functions across Australian government. Supporting the work that shapes the profession

Government veterinarians and animal health professionals undertake some of the most consequential work in the veterinary profession. Biosecurity surveillance, emergency animal disease response, veterinary public health, animal welfare regulation and wildlife health management are functions that protect Australia’s livestock industries, public health systems and environmental assets. This work has national significance and sits at the intersection of science, policy and public interest.

AVA recognises the unique professional environment of government veterinary teams — the regulatory context, the cross-jurisdictional nature of the work, the emphasis on evidence-based policy and the breadth of disciplines involved.

This new membership is designed to reflect that environment, providing government teams with access to the professional networks, knowledge resources and policy platforms that are directly relevant to their functions.

Through AVA membership, government veterinary professionals gain a recognised voice in national policy discussions, access to peer communities that span the full breadth of the profession, and the professional development and wellbeing support that sustains long-term careers in government veterinary service.

AVA’s role is to be the professional home for every veterinarian and animal health professional in Australia — including those whose work serves the public interest through government.

Who this membership is designed for

The government team membership is available to veterinary and animal health functions within the following categories of organisation

State and territory departments

The operational delivery of animal biosecurity, health surveillance, welfare regulation and emergency response across each jurisdiction. Includes primary industries, agriculture and environment departments.

Federal agencies

National biosecurity policy, border biosecurity, trade access and interjurisdictional coordination. Includes DAFF Biosecurity Animal Division, OCVO and CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness.

Statutory and regulatory bodies

Independent government statutory authorities and regulatory bodies with veterinary or animal health functions.

Racing integrity commissions

State and territory racing integrity commissions and welfare bodies established under legislation

Who is covered?

The package covers the veterinary or animal health function within the purchasing entity — not the whole organisation. Every covered team member receives their own individual AVA membership, aligned to their constitutional membership category.

A single, consolidated budget line

At $11,895 per year, the government team membership replaces fragmented individual renewal processes with a single annual invoice. For teams of 14 or more, the effective per-head cost falls below the standard individual All Access membership rate of $888 per person.

This membership was developed in direct response to feedback from government veterinary professionals who told us they wanted a simpler, more accessible pathway into AVA. As an introductory product, we are committed to refining it over time and welcome feedback from early adopters — your experience will directly shape how this offering evolves.

The 2026 pricing has been set to make whole-team coverage genuinely accessible for government veterinary functions. We will review it annually and will always communicate well ahead of renewal — so there are no surprises.

How it works- set up and administration

Submit an expression of interest via the form on this page. A member of the AVA team will follow up to answer any initial questions and confirm whether your team is likely to be eligible.

Every government team membership begins with a direct discussion between AVA and the relevant decision-maker. Eligibility is confirmed and the scope of coverage is agreed at this stage.

A single invoice for $11,895 is issued. Payment is upfront at the full annual rate. Teams joining mid-year receive bonus months to ensure a full twelve months of membership value.

The entity provides a staff list covering the qualifying veterinary or animal health function. AVA creates individual membership records for each team member — no per-person administration is required from the entity.

Each team member receives an individual welcome email to select their Special Interest Groups, set preferences and begin engaging with the AVA professional community.

New starters can be added throughout the membership year at no extra cost. When staff depart, AVA is notified and access ends. Annual renewal requires an updated staff list and a signed authorised officer declaration for Allied Professional members proving their employment within your department.

Your questions answered about AVA’s group package membership

Being a member of the AVA means contributing to the collective voice of Australia’s leading veterinary professional association and helping shape the future of the profession.

AVA membership connects your department to the national professional community for veterinary science in Australia — the peers, knowledge resources, policy platforms and professional development that support careers in government veterinary service.

Every covered team member receives All Access membership, including access to all 19 Special Interest Groups, the Australian Veterinary Journal, and other AVA publications, evidence-based CPD relevant to government work, significant discounts on national events and conferences, an interative CPD tracker and statement service, opportunities to hold office and take on leadership roles within AVA and a direct voice in the policy discussions that shape the profession.

For teams of 14 or more, the $11,895 flat fee also works out at less per person than individual membership at $888, with one invoice and one renewal covering the whole team.

More broadly, government vets working in biosecurity, public health, animal welfare and emergency response benefit from being connected to the wider profession. AVA provides the peer networks, the evidence base and the national advocacy that makes that connection meaningful.

At $11,895, this package may fall below the threshold that triggers a formal tender process in many jurisdictions, though each agency is subject to its own procurement rules. AVA is able to provide a formal quote, and organisational profile to support an internal approval process.

For teams of fewer than 14, individual All Access membership at $888 per person is likely to represent better value. Individual membership includes access to all 19 Special Interest Groups and the full suite of All Access inclusions, so smaller teams are not disadvantaged in terms of professional access. AVA is developing options for smaller government and regulatory teams and expects to introduce further pathways in future. In the interim, we are pleased to assist smaller teams with individual membership set-up which represents excellent value.

The package covers staff whose primary responsibilities relate to animal biosecurity, veterinary public health, food safety, animal welfare regulation and enforcement, government veterinary clinical services, emergency animal disease response, wildlife and environmental health, or racing integrity and welfare. It does not extend to whole-of-agency enrolment. Eligibility is confirmed in the initial discussion with AVA.

New staff can be added to the package throughout the membership year at no additional cost. When a team member departs, AVA should be notified and their access will be ended. No refunds or credits apply for individual departures — the package fee covers the team function rather than specific individuals.

This membership was developed in direct response to feedback from government veterinary professionals who told us they wanted a simpler, more accessible pathway into AVA. As an introductory offer we are committed to refining it over time and welcome feedback from government departments. The 2026 pricing has been set to make whole-team coverage affordable and accessible for government veterinary functions. We will review it annually and will always communicate well ahead of renewal so there are no surprises on any potential refinements.

At each annual renewal the department is required to provide an updated staff list including name, role, membership category and contact details for each covered team member, and a signed declaration from an authorised officer in respect of any Allied Professional members. AVA manages the renewal process and will make contact ahead of the renewal date.
