The NEW AVA academic team membership is designed to bring whole-faculty coverage to veterinary schools across Australia. Supporting the work that shapes the profession

Academic veterinarians and veterinary scientists are doing some of the most important work in the profession. Through research, education and clinical training, they are building the knowledge, skills and leaders that veterinary medicine depends on. The work that happens in Australia’s veterinary faculties today shapes the standards, policy and practice of the profession for decades to come.

AVA recognises the unique environment of academic veterinary work — the simultaneous demands of teaching, research and clinical supervision, the importance of evidence-informed practice, and the role that faculty members play in connecting the profession’s future with its present. This membership is designed to reflect that environment, providing faculties with access to the professional networks, scholarly resources and policy platforms that support academic veterinary careers at every stage.

Through AVA membership, academic veterinary professionals gain access to peer communities that span clinical practice, research and industry, a direct voice in national policy on workforce, research funding and curriculum, and the professional recognition that comes from being part of Australia’s peak veterinary body.

AVA’s role is to be the professional home for every veterinarian and animal health professional in Australia — including those whose work is building the future of the profession.

Who this membership is designed for

The academic faculty membership is available to any accredited veterinary school or faculty operating within an Australian university. There are eight accredited veterinary schools in Australia. One subscription covers the whole school — veterinarians, researchers, postdoctoral staff, clinical supervisors and allied professional staff across teaching, research and clinical training functions. If your primary role is within the veterinary school, you are covered.

Who is covered?

The package covers the veterinary school or faculty — not the whole university. Every covered staff member receives their own individual AVA membership, aligned to their constitutional membership category. Students have a separate AVA student membership pathway.

A single, consolidated budget line

At $11,895 per year, the academic team membership replaces fragmented individual renewal processes with a single annual invoice. For teams of 14 or more, the effective per-head cost falls below the standard individual All Access membership rate of $888 per person.

This membership was developed in direct response to feedback from academic veterinary professionals who told us they wanted a simpler, more accessible pathway into AVA. As an introductory product, we are committed to refining it over time and welcome feedback from academic teams.

How it works- set up and administration

Submit an expression of interest via the form on this page. A member of the AVA team will follow up to answer any initial questions and confirm whether your academic team is likely to be eligible.

Every group package membership begins with a direct discussion between AVA and the relevant decision-maker. Eligibility is confirmed and the scope of coverage is agreed at this stage.

A single invoice for $11,895 is issued. Payment is upfront at the full annual rate. Faculties joining mid-year receive bonus months to ensure a full twelve months of membership value.

The faculty provides a staff list covering eligible veterinary school staff. AVA creates individual membership records for each person — no per-person administration is required from the faculty.

Each staff member receives an individual welcome email to select their Special Interest Groups, set preferences and begin engaging with the AVA professional community.

New appointments can be added throughout the membership year at no extra cost. When staff depart, AVA is notified and access ends. Annual renewal requires an updated staff list and a signed authorised officer declaration for Allied Professional members proving their employment within your department.

Your questions answered about AVA’s group package membership

Being a member of the AVA means contributing to the collective voice of Australia’s leading veterinary professional association and helping shape the future of the profession.

AVA membership connects your faculty to the national professional community for veterinary science in Australia — the peers, knowledge resources, policy platforms and professional development that support academic veterinary careers at every stage.

Every covered staff member receives All Access membership, including access to all 19 Special Interest Groups, the Australian Veterinary Journal and other AVA publications, evidence-based CPD relevant to academic work, significant discounts on national conferences and events, an interactive CPD tracker and statement service, and opportunities to hold office and take on leadership roles within AVA.

For early-career academics and postdocs, membership removes the cost barrier that has kept too many outside the professional community at exactly the moment it matters most.

For your institution, it is a meaningful investment in the development, networks and professional identity of your people. For teams of 14 or more, the $11,895 flat fee also works out at less per person than individual membership at $888, with one invoice and one renewal covering the whole faculty.

More broadly, academic vets benefit from being connected to clinical practitioners, researchers and industry — the peer networks and national advocacy that make AVA membership meaningful beyond the campus.

Yes. Veterinary teaching hospitals that operate as part of an accredited veterinary school are included under the faculty membership. Veterinarians, veterinary scientists and allied professional staff whose primary role is within the teaching hospital function are covered under the same flat fee as the broader faculty.

This is an introductory offer and the 2026 pricing has been set to test appetite and build relationships across the academic veterinary sector. For institutions with large teaching hospital teams, we see this as an opportunity to explore how this model can work in practice and shape how it evolves. AVA will review pricing and eligibility annually as we learn from early adopters.

If you are unsure whether your teaching hospital structure qualifies, or would like to discuss what coverage looks like for your institution specifically, get in touch directly.

For teams of fewer than 14, individual All Access membership at $888 per person is likely to represent better value. AVA is refining options for smaller academic teams and expects to introduce further pathways in future. In the interim, we are pleased to help smaller faculties get set up on individual memberships.

No. Students have a separate AVA student membership pathway, which is free of charge. The faculty package covers employed staff whose primary role relates to veterinary education, research or clinical supervision. We are happy to assist with student membership set-up alongside a faculty package if that would be useful.

New staff can be added throughout the membership year at no additional cost. When a staff member departs, AVA should be notified and their access will be ended. No refunds or credits apply for individual departures — the package fee covers the faculty function rather than specific individuals.

This membership was developed in direct response to feedback from academic veterinary professionals who told us they wanted a simpler, more accessible pathway into AVA. As an introductory offer we are committed to refining it over time and welcome feedback from academic teams. The 2026 pricing has been set to make whole-team coverage affordable and accessible for academic veterinary functions. We will review it annually and will always communicate well ahead of renewal so there are no surprises on any potential refinements.

At each annual renewal the faculty is required to provide an updated staff list including name, role, membership category and contact details for each covered staff member, and a signed declaration from an authorised officer in respect of any Allied Professional members. AVA manages the renewal process and will make contact ahead of the renewal date.
