Advocacy & Policy

Advocating for the profession, guided by members

Veterinarians and veterinary teams play a vital role in Australian society. They safeguard animal health and welfare, contribute to public health and biosecurity and support the communities they live and work in. They are among Australia’s most trusted professionals, known for their compassion and strong ethics, while working in roles that are both technically demanding and emotionally complex.

The AVA is the national voice for this profession, maintaining active relationships across federal, state and local government and providing expert advice on animal health, welfare and public health policy. When legislation changes, budgets are set, or public debate shapes community expectations of the profession, the AVA is at the table.

We engage directly with parliamentarians, regulators and industry leaders to shape the policies that affect veterinary professionals and the animals in their care. From biosecurity and prescribing rights to animal welfare standards and workforce sustainability, the AVA represents member views where decisions are made, in parliament, in regulatory consultations and in the media.

Policy at the AVA is member-driven. The Policy Advisory Council draws on representatives from every division and special interest group, translating what members care about into national policies and position statements that carry the weight of the whole profession behind them.
