On-Demand AVCB Webinar | Private Wildlife Conservation – A case study of Parma Wallaby translocations and reintroductions | Prof George Wilson
13 August, 2025 @ 8:00 pm - 14 August, 2026 @ 9:00 pm AEST
Free - $50.00
Parma wallabies, once believed to be extinct, were rediscovered in the 1960s. Today, they survive in parts of Australia and New Zealand, but remain vulnerable to extinction due to fox predation and habitat degradation.
Establishing additional “insurance” populations—in predator-free reserves, zoos, or private sanctuaries—is essential to their long-term survival. However, successful translocations require healthy individuals and well-managed processes for capture, transport, and release, all designed to reduce stress and maximise survival.
This presentation concludes with consideration of barriers to creating more safe havens and practical recommendations for strengthening the role of zoos and private sanctuaries in supporting national conservation efforts and ensuring a future for threatened species like the Parma wallaby.
The AVCB Annual Meeting will be held prior to this webinar.
