Pathway to accreditation
The AVA Chartered Veterinary Practitioner™ (CVP) is an accreditation program recognising veterinarians who have undertaken further education and training to become well-rounded general practitioners. This accreditation is currently available for small animal practitioners.
To become accredited, you will complete the required CVP courses along with structured continuing professional development (CPD) in approved areas of interest. The CVP courses must be completed within five years of enrolment. Relevant CPD activities completed up to five years prior to enrolment, as well as those completed within five years after enrolment, can be counted towards the accreditation.

AVA CVP Accreditation Program Enrolment
To begin the AVA CVP accreditation process, applicants will need to meet the following requirements:
- Hold current membership of the Australian Veterinary Association. All Access, Flexi and Connected membership options are accepted, so you can choose the option that best suits your career stage and professional needs. For more details, please check out our Membership options page.
- Maintain AVA membership throughout the accreditation process.
- Hold the right to practise veterinary science in Australia.
- Meet English language proficiency requirements.

Applying for AVA CVP Accreditation
To apply for AVA CVP accreditation, applicants must:
- Have held AVA membership while completing the requirements for accreditation. All Access, Flexi and Connected membership options are accepted.
- Have successfully completed the required CVP core courses within the designated timelines.
- Have met the required CPD requirements, including a minimum of 60 CPD points in small animal medicine and 90 CPD points in a small animal elective area.
- Demonstrate good standing within the veterinary profession.
- Pledge to uphold the AVA Code of Professional Conduct.
Applications and CPD records must be submitted via the My Learning platform. There is no application fee applicable at present.
Using AVA CVP postnominals
Individual veterinarians accredited as an AVA Chartered Veterinary Practitioner™ may use the postnominals “AVA CVP (Small Animal)” for the duration for which they remain accredited.
Accreditation Maintenance and Re-accreditation
Maintenance Requirements
Accredited AVA Chartered Veterinary Practitioners must:- Maintain veterinary registration in Australia, or with an AVA-approved international veterinary registration authority.
- Maintain membership with the Australian Veterinary Association. All Access, Flexi and Connected membership options are accepted.
- Complete a minimum of 200 CPD points within each five-year accreditation cycle.
- Accrue CPD points across at least three years of the five-year cycle.
- Report maintenance requirements to the AVA annually by 30 June for the previous 12-month period, via My Learning platform.
CPD Categories
The minimum 200 CPD points must be completed across the following categories:| CPD category | Minimum requirement |
