In late 2025, major amendments to Australia’s flagship environmental legislation passed Parliament. These amendments are progressively commencing through 2026, alongside the development of key statutory instruments. This presentation will explore the amendments and reflect on what they mean for Australia’s wildlife and the habitats they depend upon. This is likely to be of interest to the veterinary community who engage with wildlife.

- Biography
Justine Bell-James is Professor at The University of Queensland’s TC Beirne School of Law. Her expertise spans environmental regulation and biodiversity conservation, with particular strengths in coastal and marine ecosystems. She has led major research projects funded by the Australian Research Council, CSIRO, and the National Environmental Science Program. Her work on blue carbon regulation informed Australia’s first blue carbon methodology under the Emissions Reduction Fund. Justine was involved in the recent federal environmental law reform process, participating in stakeholder engagement sessions and Senate inquiries. Justine is also a Director of the National Environmental Law Association, a Member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, and a Director of Wildlife Queensland.
