AVA ACT Committee Meeting Update

The AVA ACT Committee convened for an in-person meeting on 13 October, hosted by Dr Michael Hayward at Gungahlin Vet Hospital. Under the leadership of our new AVA ACT Division President, Dr Natalie Wood, the committee worked through a busy and productive agenda.

  • Advocacy & Government Relations: Members identified key gaps in our current bird flu updates—specifically regarding PPE reimbursement, testing access, and clinical guidance for vets. This will provide a strong foundation for upcoming discussions with Minister Orr’s office later this year. Members also reviewed the 2027 NSW election priorities as a guiding framework.
  • Member Support & New Graduates: Members discussed Dr Natalie Wood’s initiative to create a dedicated new graduate handbook and mentoring program. Additionally, Dr Heather Shortridge has officially stepped into the ACT Advocacy Forum role.
  • National & Regulatory Updates: Dr Kevin Doyle provided an update from the World Veterinary Association Policy Committee. On the regulatory front, positive news was shared regarding Regulation 13, with an exemption now secured for emergency use medication. Plans are also underway to gather data on the costs associated with treating strays and wildlife.
The committee will reconvene on Monday, 9 November 2026.
