National Advocacy Project: Reforming Veterinary Medicines and Poisons Management

A new AVA working group has been established to tackle the challenges around inconsistent, outdated, and often impractical regulation of veterinary medicines and poisons. The aim of Managing Medicines and Poisons – A Path to Reform for Veterinary Practice in Australia is to develop evidence-based recommendations for nationally harmonised, fit-for-purpose legislative and regulatory frameworks that enable safe, consistent, and practical medicines management—no matter the practice type or location.

The working group brings together representatives from across the AVA membership and will consult with subject matter experts and relevant external stakeholders throughout the process.

Phase 1 of the project will focus on gathering insights from veterinarians across Australia, documenting the barriers, inconsistencies, and compliance challenges faced in everyday practice – particularly in mobile, rural, remote, or non-traditional practice contexts.

Your input will be critical to shaping this reform. We encourage members to stay engaged in consultation opportunities over the coming months. Together, we can work toward a more practical and consistent approach to veterinary medicines and poisons regulation across Australia.
