APVMA review of anticoagulant rodenticides

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is consulting on significant proposed regulatory changes affecting anticoagulant rodenticides, including first- and second-generation products commonly used in agricultural and pest management contexts.

Following an extensive scientific review, the APVMA is proposing substantial new restrictions and regulatory actions aimed at reducing risks to people and non-target animals, including native wildlife.

The AVA is seeking member input to ensure the profession’s practical experience, animal health considerations and risk-management perspectives are clearly reflected.

Why this matters
The proposals include:

  • Suspension of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs*), with new enforceable national conditions on their use
  • Wide-ranging restrictions on how and where all anticoagulant rodenticides can be used
  • Proposed cancellation of specific products deemed to pose unacceptable risks

* These are products containing the active ingredients: brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone and floucoumafen
