Host an AVE candidate at your clinic

Thinking about supporting an overseas trained vet?
Opening your clinic to a vet finding their feet here is one of the most valuable things a practice can do for the profession.

Hosting an AVE candidate is a simple way to support overseas-trained vets as they prepare for their practical exam.

Vets who qualified overseas must pass the Australasian Veterinary Examination (AVE) before they can practise here. Candidates seeking placements have already completed the written component and are now preparing for the practical exam.

A placement in a clinical setting gives them the opportunity to apply their skills, build confidence, and become familiar with Australian practice standards under supervision.

The AVA maintains a database of AVE candidates looking for work experience placements. Register your interest and we’ll provide a current list so you can connect directly with suitable candidates.

How it works

Placements are structured as unpaid work experience to support exam preparation, rather than employment. If you decide to offer paid work at a later stage, this would be a separate arrangement between your clinic and the candidate.

Before a work experience placement begins, you’ll need to:

  • Confirm the candidate has the appropriate limited or conditional registration with your state or territory veterinary board
  • Ensure your professional indemnity and public liability insurance policies cover them
  • Put a short written agreement in place outlining the unpaid work experience arrangement

You decide on whether a candidate is the right fit for your clinic.

The AVE candidate list service is provided by the Australian Veterinary Association for the benefit of its members. The aim of the service is to put potential AVE candidates and veterinary clinics in touch with each other.

Veterinary clinics shall satisfy themselves as to the suitability of any AVE candidates before engaging such candidate. The veterinary clinic shall be responsible for obtaining any permits, if necessary, and for the arrangement of medical examinations and/or investigations into the medical history of any AVE candidate and satisfy any medical or other requirements or qualifications required by law. The veterinary clinic should be certain that PL/PI insurance is in place and covers the AVE candidate for work experience.

The AVA or any of its officers or directors shall not be liable under any circumstances for any loss, damage or expenses suffered or incurred by the veterinary clinic arising from or in any way connected with the AVA providing a list of AVE candidates to the veterinary clinic or the engagement of any AVE candidate by the veterinary clinic.

This work experience is principally for the benefit of the AVE candidate to gain experience in order to sit their clinical exam, and as such will be treated as unpaid work experience. A written agreement between the veterinary clinic and the AVE candidate outlining this should be documented.

Any additional remuneration or related conditions of an employment relationship should be negotiated separately to the work experience placement, and conducted directly between the employer and the AVE candidate.
