AVA engaged in Cyclone Narelle response in Exmouth, WA

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is closely involved in the emergency response to the impacts of Cyclone Narelle on the Exmouth community in Western Australia, working alongside government and local partners to support animal welfare during a challenging and evolving situation.

The Department of Biosecurity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) is coordinating veterinary support for the response and recovery effort. While there has been minimal impact on livestock, horses and companion animals, unfortunately, extensive mortality has been confirmed among seabirds and marine species.

Access to Exmouth remains limited by both land and air, with current priorities focused on restoring road access and essential services for the community. Based on current assessments, additional veterinary support is not required at this stage. The WA Government response is utilising and supporting local veterinary and wildlife care resources, while facilitating the entry of essential goods needed to assist with animal care and recovery.

For those who wish to help, financial donations and targeted goods are being coordinated through WA Wildlife.

We extend our sincere thanks to the veterinary teams on the ground, as well as the dedicated wildlife carer network, who have been working tirelessly under extreme conditions to assess and respond to animal welfare needs.

The AVA will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates as required.
