ASAV Webinar | Emergencies in GP without referral to a 24h facility | Dr Claire Sharp
15 July, 2026 @ 8:00 pm - 15 July, 2027 @ 9:00 pm AEST
Free - $50.00
GP vets are the frontline for most veterinary emergencies yet often these cases are challenging and stressful for all involved. Think respiratory distress, trauma, toxins, GDV, and more. It’s even harder when you don’t have the option to refer to a 24h facility.
This webinar will attempt to simplify the complexity of emergency presentations with a focus on stabilising abnormalities of the life-sustaining organ systems – cardiovascular, respiratory, and central nervous system. While we can’t cover everything, we’ll approach these cases by getting back to basics and focusing on doing what we can with what we’ve got.
Get ready for a wild ride of triage, primary survey, using point-of-care diagnostics including ultrasound, and life-saving interventions!

- Biography
Claire Sharp is an Associate Professor in Emergency and Critical Care at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Murdoch University, where she also serves as Section Head of Emergency and Critical Care at The Animal Hospital. Before pursuing specialty training, she worked in private general and emergency practice in Canberra — and during her ECC internship and residency she continued working in private emergency settings without access to a specialty hospital, giving her first-hand experience of managing critical cases with limited backup.
Claire completed her ECC residency and a Master of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the University of Missouri, before joining the faculty at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. She returned to Murdoch in 2015 and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.
Her research focuses on sepsis biomarkers, trauma, and coagulation. Tonight she draws on both specialist expertise and her roots in general practice to explore how GPs can confidently manage emergency presentations when after-hours referral isn't an option.
