ISELP has arrived in Australia!

In February we held our first ISELP module in Australia thanks to an exciting collaboration between the EVA and ISELP. ISELP, the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology, was formed in the United States in 2006 under the direction of world renowned Professor Jean-Marie Denoix. ISELP was formed to provide advanced education in equine lameness, musculoskeletal ultrasonography and sports medicine. ISELP provides practical skills for the equine veterinarian, enabling practitioners to go home and put new skills and knowledge to work on their own patients.

The collaboration between EVA and ISELP provides EVA members with complimentary ISELP membership. EVA members now have the ability to attend modules in their own backyard with EVA and ISELP committing to hold modules on a yearly basis. The core educational opportunities with ISELP are based on eight 3 day modules covering different anatomical regions. Each module has 2 full days of lectures covering anatomy, biomechanics, clinical examination, diagnostic analgesia, treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions.

The presentation of clinical cases further enhances the learning opportunities. The third day is practical hands on training in musculoskeletal ultrasonography with ISELP certified instructors and sports medicine/imaging specialists.

There are 8 modules:
– Foot and pastern (held in Sydney February 2026)
– Fetlock and carpus
– Proximal forelimb
– Distal hindlimb up to proximal suspensory
– Hock and crus
– Stifle (next Australian module January 2027)
– Neck and Back
– Pelvis and hip

ISELP has over a 1000 members worldwide, with modules presented in both the United States and in Europe by Professor Denoix and ISELP board members Dr Erik Bergman and Dr Kurt Selberg. ISELP has over 1000 members worldwide and has been an excellent network for equine sports medicine and lameness clinicians. Having celebrated the 20 year anniversary this year, ISELP has evolved to not just encompass lameness diagnosis and ultrasonography but also advanced imaging modalities. ISELP also now runs a separate 3D imaging module, alternating between the United States and Europe.

What does being a certified member entail? Following completion of all eight modules, members can take the ISELP certification examination to become certified members. Professionally this is recognition of an advanced knowledge base broadening a veterinarian’s scope of diagnostic skills along with demonstration of competency in musculoskeletal ultrasonography. The certification examination has a number of sections. In addition to a written examination, video analysis, diagnostic image identification and a practical examination, delegates also have to present both clinical cases and scientific review of publications.
