The interim Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC) is at the forefront of efforts to advance a One Health approach to disease prevention and control in Australia. This approach recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health. It seeks to foster collaboration across sectors to address emerging health threats such as zoonoses and the impacts of environmental change.

This presentation will provide an overview of the interim CDC’s and One Health Unit’s vision, priorities, and current initiatives, highlighting the importance of independent, evidence-based public health leadership.

There will be time for questions to be answered from live webinar attendees.

    Biography

    Sarah is an experienced executive leader with 30 years of One Health and biosecurity experience across government, private, and not-for-profit sectors. She is the Director of One Health in the interim Australian CDC, the principal consultant of One Biosecurity Solutions, and a Non-Executive Director for Australian Eggs. She was the NSW Chief Veterinarian Officer leading multiple emergency responses, such as Japanese Encephalitis, and owned two veterinary practices in city and regional locations. Sarah is passionate about One Health and improving human, animal and ecosystem health.

    Jacob Madden
    Biography

    Jacob is the Assistant Secretary of the Australian Centre for Disease Control Establishment Strategy Branch at the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. In this role he leads the policy and strategic design for a new CDC in Australia, including developing legislation and negotiating with state and territory governments. He is also responsible for a program of work to modernise data sharing for public health purposes in Australia, including legislative reform, governance and technology.

    Prior to this role Jacob led the Department’s response to COVID-19 and other emergencies in aged care settings.

    Jacob holds a Master of Public Health from the Australian National University and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons)/Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame Australia.

    Dr Emma Rooke
    Biography

    Dr Emma Rooke is Assistant Director of the One Health Unit of the interim Centre for Disease Control. She has a background in veterinary public health, epidemiology, biosecurity, emergency preparedness and response, and policy development. She has previously been Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer of South Australia and Chief Veterinary Officer of the Solomon Islands, and holds a Masters in Veterinary Public Health Management, and Memberships in Epidemiology of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. Through her experience in local, state, national and international settings, she has developed a deep understanding of the inter-connectedness of our collective health systems. Her aspiration is for a One Health approach to become the cultural norm, embedded into the way we do business across sectors.
