On-Demand VERA Webinar | Artificial intelligence in veterinary education and practice: What’s out there, what are the challenges and opportunities | Dr Kate Worthing
10 November, 2025 @ 8:00 pm - 11 November, 2026 @ 9:00 pm AEDT
Free - $50.00
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly permeating our lives, from automated scheduling and medical record transcription in veterinary practice, to the text summarizers and virtual tutors on offer to veterinary students. Generative AI tools can pass veterinary exams and write entire essays, albeit at a standard lower than the average veterinary student. As such, veterinary educators must be aware of the AI tools available to students and how the use of such tools may impact learning, teaching and assessment. Students must also be aware of how AI may impact their future careers. This presentation will explore 1) recent research on perceptions and use of AI in veterinary practice; 2) how we might help soon-to-be graduates navigate the influx of AI tools in their careers; 3) how educators can design assessments that maintain integrity while still providing meaningful educational outcomes; and 4) examples of how AI can be integrated into veterinary curricula.

Dr Kate Worthing is a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Sydney with a strong interest in teaching day-one microbiology skills to veterinary students. With over 15 years of experience in veterinary practice and 10 years in teaching infectious diseases, she juggles her teaching and research with casual work at a busy general practice. Her work in general practice has recently piqued her interest in the gaps between the AI tools becoming available for practitioners and what is taught about AI in veterinary schools. Outside of work, she enjoys gardening, music and watching the adventures of her modern-day dinosaurs, also known as chooks.
