Legislative and regulatory environment for veterinary professionals

Understanding the legislative and regulatory environment for veterinary professionals

Navigating the legal landscape as a veterinary professional in Australia requires more than clinical expertise. Whether you work in private practice, government, research or industry, you operate within a layered framework of federal and state legislation that governs everything from prescribing rights to workplace safety.

The AVA has compiled this resource to give members a practical starting point for understanding their obligations. Because legislation varies by state and territory and by the nature of your work, this page is a guide rather than an exhaustive reference. It remains your responsibility to ensure you are across all legislation relevant to your specific context.

Use the sections below to explore the key legislative areas that apply to veterinary professionals across Australia.

State governments have responsibility for managing diseases in livestock, and regulating the use of poisons and therapeutic goods.

More information about animal welfare legislation in your state or territory can be found on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website.

State governments establish codes of practice to protect animal welfare in places such as pet shops, breeding establishments, pounds and shelters. They also enforce animal welfare rules, usually through animal welfare organisations like the RSPCA or the Animal Welfare League.

The Australian Government is responsible for trade and international agreements relating to animal welfare.
