ACV executive members, Lachie and Alex recently headed to James Cook University’s Rural Prac Day, spending time with veterinary students to share insights into the realities of working as a cattle vet in Australia. The event provided a valuable opportunity to engage with future veterinarians, answer questions, and showcase the practical skills used every day in rural practice.
One of the highlights of the day was the anatomy station, where students were challenged to remove an eye and extract a brain specimen within a set timeframe. Alex summed up the experience best:
“A good day out at the JCU Rural Prac Day. Cut out some eyes and got some brains out.
Lachy stopped in for a station, and every student got their eye out and brain out.
The past few years only one person has got the brain out in the time frame, so it was great that everyone had a successful day.”
The enthusiasm and skill shown by the students impressed both Lachie and Alex, making for an enjoyable and rewarding day of networking, mentoring, and hands-on learning.
