From the President – October 2026

Spring is now very much here! and EVA is on the move! Here is what’s happening across our community.

Scone shines for the NSW state meeting

On September 10 I was able to join an enthusiastic gathering of members in Scone at the Hunter Valley Equine Research Centre for the New South Wales state meeting. Two great speakers and two interesting topics – Dr Tate Morris speaking on ‘Dynamic neuroprosthesis: advancing the treatment of laryngeal hemiplegia’ and Dr Amy Williamson presenting an ‘Update on caudal reproductive surgery in the mare’. Thank you to everyone who came along and to our major sponsor Randlab and to the organisers and speakers who made it such a success.

Love the Horse Days: encouraging students to join our profession.

It is wonderful to see such a great initiative taking off. Love the Horse Days are coming up at the University of Queensland on 11 October and at Adelaide University on 17 October. If you are nearby, consider getting involved and supporting the next generation of equine vets.

Dental subcommittee: resources on the way

Our dental subcommittee has been hard at work developing added resources for members. Watch this space, as more details are coming soon.

Spring edition of the Australian Equine Veterinarian

The spring edition will be landing on your desk in the coming weeks, and it is a big one. Inside you will find all the news and memorable photos from Bain Fallon 2026, along with the scientific abstracts and peer reviewed articles including:

• Performance evaluation of 3,824 Thoroughbred horses reinstated to racing following retirement between 1 August 2010 and 31 July 2020

• A case of a traumatic diaphragmatic hernia in a 29-year-old Warmblood mare

• Use of acepromazine as a training aid in ridden exercising horses

You will also find how to register and all the information about the Stifle and Thigh Model presented by Dr. Jean-Marie Denoix. This ISELP course is on 28-30 January 2027. In collaboration with EVA this world class course is a rare opportunity to gain experience from the world’s leading expert in equine musculoskeletal anatomy and diagnostic imaging.

Media training: sharpening our voice.

President-elect Dr Paula Williams and I have recently completed media training with Kirstine Murray of Media Training Professionals provided by AVA. Our mock radio/TV interviews on a Hendra Case and current topics in racing were extremely helpful and made us think about the message we want members of the public to hear when issues arise. This training will help us advocate more effectively for equine vets and the horses in our care.

Save the date: Bain Fallon 2027

Mark your diaries now. Bain Fallon returns on 18 to 22 July 2027 at Rydges Hunter Valley, with a program built around racing, ophthalmology, and current therapy. It is shaping up to be another momentous week.

It is a busy time of year, with plenty happening. I hope you are feeling energised and productive. Do not forget to attend the spring state meetings for excellent continuing education, collegiality, and fun!

Kindest regards

Brian
