An update from your ASAV President – June 2026

It’s getting colder and I’m finding a lot of our older pets are coming in because they are stiff rising and slower.  One of the joys of general practice is finding the right solution and medication for these often older pets.  One of the best things about the ASAV Conference from the 17-20th August at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast (apart from combining with the VBG) is that our international speakers Drs Sheilah Robertson and Duncan Lascelles are world experts on maintaining quality of life. Have a look at the program because there are also plenty of exciting local speakers in both streams.

AVA have launched the new website and membership model. It is quite a lot to take in at first. If you know of any vets who are missing being part of the AVA but can’t justify the cost perhaps because they are not working as much, then please do ask them to have a look at the connected membership. We would love to have them back and part of the profession. It also includes free SIGs so spread the news!

We have an extension on the ASAV awards due to the website update. Please take the time to make a nomination at ASAV Awards – Australian Veterinary Association and check out the AVA website at the same time. It is so much easier.

Nominations are also open for three ASAV Committee positions. We would love to have you join us. If you are interested, please contact our EO Elaine Robertson elaine.robertson@ava.com.au

Finally, a reminder that the Chartered Veterinary Practitioners (CVP) is a career enhancing step in the progression to becoming a well-rounded general practitioner and more information on this is available below.

Looking forward to catching up in August!

Dr Julia Crawford
