Help build a vibrant future for veterinary professional: Become a Mentor (or Mentee!)

Applications are now open for the AVA Mentoring Program 2026 – and this is your chance to make a meaningful impact on the profession while growing your own skills along the way.

For more than a decade, the AVA’s mentoring program has been supporting final-year veterinary students and early-career veterinarians through one of the most important transitions in their careers. Whether you’re looking for guidance or ready to give back, this program offers a powerful opportunity to connect, learn, and thrive. Research confirms that mentoring helps retain veterinarians in the profession and protect against mental ill-health.

Why get involved?

Participants are thoughtfully matched based on their preferences, ensuring a strong and supportive mentoring relationship from day one. Once matched, both mentors and mentees gain access to a suite of online resources, videos, and self-paced training designed to build confidence and maximise the experience.

And the benefits go both ways. Experienced mentor Dr Catherine Chicken, who has supported four graduates through the program, describes mentoring as deeply rewarding. She has found she learns just as much from her mentee and describes the key is to listen and help mentees build trust in themselves – not just tell them what to do.

More than just clinical guidance

While clinical support is important, many mentees are seeking something more like a trusted sounding board.

Program manager and mentor Dr Rebecca Faris notes a growing interest from mentees exploring careers in public health, government, and animal welfare.

“Most mentees aren’t just looking for case advice – they want perspective, guidance, and someone outside their workplace to talk things through with.”

Having that independent voice can be invaluable – especially when navigating workplace dynamics, career uncertainty, or new opportunities.

As mentee Alice shares:

“You never really know how it’s all going to pan out after graduation, so it’s reassuring to have someone external to talk things through with, clinically and personally.”

Built for impact and connection

Mentoring is increasingly recognised as a critical component of professional development, with veterinary boards highlighting its importance in being a registered professional.

The AVA continues to evolve the program to strengthen connection across the profession, including:

  • Quarterly webinars that act as a supportive community of practice
  • A strong peer network that extends well beyond the one-on-one relationship via Facebook and the Member Hub (Circle).

It’s no wonder mentoring consistently ranks as one of the most valued member benefits.

If you’re unsure whether you have what it takes – don’t be. As experienced mentor Dr Carina Christensen explains:

“The program provides evidence-based tools and training to help you become an effective mentor. I found it hugely helpful.”

Whether you’re a seasoned clinician, retired or working in a non-clinical role, your experience has value and this program will help you develop the leadership skills to share it.

Be part of something meaningful

Mentees describe the program as career-changing, building confidence and opening new ways of thinking. And mentors consistently return year after year, driven by the sense of purpose that comes from giving back.

As mentor Sam Morley puts it:

“Every experienced vet should enrol to benefit the younger generation.”

Applications are currently open for mentees up to 4 years post-graduation and mentors with at least 3 years work experience and close August 2nd.
