
THRIVE | Mental Health First Aid REFRESHER Course – September 2026

Course participants learn about the latest research in the mental health field, work through complex mental health first aid interactions, and practice their mental health first aid skills across a range of mental health problems and mental health crisis situations.
Participants can complete a short assessment at the end of a course to extend their Mental Health First Aid Accreditation for a further 3 years.
Who should attend
Veterinarians / Nurses / Practice Managers / Students / New Graduates who are Standard/Tertiary/ATSI/Older persons MHFA accredited and due to expire before March 2026.
Learning outcomes
- Updated knowledge of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance misuse problems.
- Participants will practice practical, evidence-based communication techniques to reach out to those in need.
- Continued accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider for an additional 3 years on successsful completion of assessment.

Virtual workshop training
This component of the training has been tailor made for the veterinary profession and is facilitated by Andrew Thompson.
The training is strictly limited to 12 participants and will be delivered in two online sessions of 2.5 hours each session.
Workshop 1 – Wednesday 23 September: 11.00am to 1.30pm AEST (Sydney); and
Workshop 2 – Wednesday 30 September: 11.00am to 1.30pm AEST (Sydney).
The cost to complete this course is *$395.00 incl GST.
*This price includes an updated copy of the Mental Health First Aid manual (including Postage). You will need to have your MHFA manual handy during your sessions.
*Registration to this course is non-refundable and non-transferable so please ensure you are eligible and able to attend BOTH workshops.
To ensure your eligibilty for REFRESHER training you MUST email your current MHFA certificate to thrive@ava.com.au at least 2 weeks BEFORE the first workshop.
